XPages brings Domino Web application development to an entirely new level. It allows you to modernize your existing Domino applications and provide an incredible user experience and interface. As part of the Midwest Lotus User Group Conference 2011, MWLUG is sponsoring the MWLUG XPages Design Competition to let you show the world what you can do with XPages. We encourage you to show your development and design skills in using XPages to create one of a selected number of applications inspired by the IBM Lotus Nifty Fifty applications. You will be judged not only on your XPages development skills but also on user experience and interface design. The winners will be announced during the closing ceremony of MWLUG on Friday, August 26th, 2011.

Eligibility

Everyone, not just MWLUG attendees, can participate in this contest. Members of the MWLUG Conference Committee, MWLUG 2011 XPages Design Competition subcommittee and judges, and IBM staff are ineligible to participate in this contest.

Application Types

Entries are restricted to the following "Nifty Nine" applications listed below (taken from the "Nifty Fifty" applications from the R3/R4 days). These "Nifty Nine" applications are to be used as inspiration for your application. For more information about the "Nifty Fifty" applications, check out Stephan Wissel's blog post.

The MWLUG 2011 XPages Design Competition Site is hosted by Prominic.NET

Application Requirements
  • The application entry must be contained within a single database.
  • The application entry must be written in XPages 8.5.1 or higher.
  • The application entry must be browser-only and work correctly for IE 7, IE 8, Firefox 3.x, Safari, and Chrome.
  • The application entry must not be available commercially or on OpenNTF.org.
  • The application entry must not contain proprietary code and be made available under the Apache 2.0 License Agreement.
  • The application entry must contain enough data documents to illustrate functionality.
  • The application entry must work without the XPages Extension Library.
  • The application entry must be less than 20 Mbytes in size.
Judging Criteria

Applications will be judged based on:

  • The appropriateness of the functionality based on the application type
  • The completeness of the functionality based on the application type
  • The application's appearance (layout, colors, graphics, etc.)
  • Originality of the design

All decisions are final.

Nifty Fifty Database for XPrize Design Competition

Below are the nine Nifty Fifty databases that contestants can download and used as the inspiration for their XPrize submission. Thanks to Stephan Wissel for updating the databases to 8.5 format so that they can run on a Domino 8.5 server. These databases are the property of IBM Corporation and are provided only as application examples for the purpose of this contest. No code from these databases can be used in your submission. Submission

Entry submission is now open. Submitters must use the MWLUG XPages Design Competition submission form. The deadline for submissions has been extended to Monday, August 8th 2011, 5:00 pm Central Time.

All submissions and contestants with be showcased on the MWLUG site upon completion of this competition.

Submission Requirements
  • Only one entry is allowed per person.
  • Each entry must be submitted under only one person's name (i.e., no group entries).
  • Submitters must sign and submit as part of their entry the MWLUG XPages Design Competition Agreement which is available to download below.
Submission Process

First, make sure that on the ACL for your submission, the default is set to Manager and local encryption has been turned off.

Second, you need to complete the legal waiver in this file: MWLUG XPages Design Competition Agreement. You can either:

  • Print it, fill it out, sign it then scan it into a new electronic file, or
  • Print it, fill it out, sign it then, if you prefer to fax it, contact Mike McGarel at mcgarelgramming at gmail dot com for the fax number. When you are asked to attach the agreement, attach a blank version of the agreement.

Third, click on "Submit Your Entry" to open the submission form and attach the file(s).
